Brussels Sprouts on a Pizza?
I am not a food blogger. I leave that to the people who know what they are doing, two of my favorite being Elaine from House of Bedlam and Liz from My Favourite Pastime. But every once in a while, I come up with a great recipe all on my own so wanted to share it.
This past Thanksgiving, my contribution to the feast at my sister-in-law Eileen’s house was a side of sautéed brussels sprouts. They were well received and Eileen asked me for the recipe. It seems she has been inspired by my blog posts to cook more (she thought I was an accomplished cook but after reading my pyrex dish exploding story, she decided she could cook too if I could!).
So this post is for you Eileen. The brussels sprouts I brought to her house were originally made to go on top of my brussels sprouts pizza (yes on a pizza!) but you can make them as just a side dish if you want.
Sautéed Brussels Sprouts
– a bag or carton of brussels sprouts
– 1 shallot
– 2 tbsp. canola oil
– salt and pepper to taste
Brussels Sprouts Pizza
– a bag of store-bought pizza dough
– 1 to 2 tbsp. olive oil
– sautéed brussels sprouts
– 1 ball of fresh mozzarella cheese
– about 6 mushrooms
– 4 slices of turkey bacon
For the Sautéed Brussel Sprouts
Rinse the brussels sprouts and cut off stems.
Cut into thin slices.
Cut shallot into thin slices.
Heat 2 tbsp. of canola oil in a large pan.
Throw the shallots in and cook for 1 minute.
Throw the brussels sprouts into pan and cook for about 3 – 4 minutes, or until it starts to wilt.
Salt and pepper to taste.
And voila! Sautéed Brussel Sprouts. SO delicious and simple!
For Brussels Sprouts Pizza
Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Cut cheese into thin slices.
Cut bacon into small bite-size pieces.
Slice the mushrooms.
Sprinkle flour on a pizza stone, and work the dough until it is in a circular shape. Spread dough onto pizza stone.
Pour 1 – 2 tbsp. olive oil onto the dough and spread around so most of the dough is oiled.
Top dough with cheese slices.
Spread the sautéed brussels sprouts evenly over cheese.
Place mushroom slices all over pizza.
And lastly, sprinkle turkey bacon pieces all over the pizza.
Bake at 450 degrees for 20 minutes, or until crust is golden brown and the bottom of the pizza (when lifted with a spatula) is golden.
Never thought I would love brussels sprouts so much but this pizza really is good!
