Cousins – Then and Now
I got to see my cousins from my mom’s side of the family recently – we had a family reunion at my sister’s wedding. When we were kids, we used to see each other often, and some of us actually lived together at some point in our lives. But then we grew up and spread out all over the US.
Here’s some old photos of us.
Can you tell which one is me? The younger cousins weren’t even born yet in these pictures.
And here we are now, almost all of the cousins (minus a few who couldn’t make it) re-united, plus spouses and significant others.
When I was little, I used to idolize my cousin Linda. I wanted to be just like her when I grew up. I was so honored when she made up this special arm hold with me for that first picture. Here’s a close-up of the two of us.
I reminded her of this at my sister’s wedding and we re-created the pose.
A bit older, but just as cute, no? Except we weren’t purple back then. Must come with age.
I still want to be just like her, but she moved all the way across the country so I can’t follow her around anymore. Hmm…maybe that’s why she moved so far away…
My sister, my cousins Ih-Cheng and Ming-Chen and I also tried to re-create a family-famous jumping pose we took together years ago. This was the original picture.
Yes, I know – me, the one that ended up being a professional dancer, never left the ground while everyone else is up in the air.
And here was our re-creation at my sister’s wedding.
I know – once again, I am still on the ground while everyone else is up in the air.
Here’s the two pictures side by side.
I think this was a pretty good re-creation of that original shot. Ih-Cheng is still the highest, my sister has her hands up, and Ming-Chen is the second highest. And they were both taken in California (thirty years apart).
It only took us about fifty takes before we got that picture.
Here’s one of the takes.
The wedding guests were starting to wonder what we were up to. If you’ve never tried jumping for a camera in a dress and heels (much less in a wedding dress), I wouldn’t recommend it. Plus we’re now thirty years older than we were in the original picture so you can imagine how tired the four of us were after jumping in the air fifty times.
There’s a lot more of these but I won’t bore you with them. It was great to see my cousins. We only get to see each other at weddings these days. How did over thirty years go by already?
It seemed like just yesterday when this picture was taken…
